Ignition Research: The Fusion Industry Market Analyst
When Ignition Research was asked by one of our clients to help size the fusion energy market, we found that there was very little hard data available. This was interesting because fusion has been an area of strong interest (and funded by a number of governments) for a long time due to its potential to provide clean and abundant energy. As a result, there has been huge and intense investment in fusion energy by venture capital (VC) and private equity (PE) firms, which tend not to invest in concepts without some idea of the market size.
A prime example of the lack of quantifiable information for fusion energy was that neither the US Energy Information Agency (US-EIA) nor the International Energy Agency (IEA) included fusion in their 2022-2050 electricity generation forecasts. This motivated us to focus on the fusion market and other major technologies such as electric vehicle (EV) charging, hyperscale data centers, and ocean cargo transport that will drive electricity demand. Our goal is to accurately quantify the future demand for electricity, and the driving factors of this demand, and to understand how fusion (along with other green energy resources such as renewables) can meet the Earth’s energy needs in our future.
